Dakar is light years ahead of Conakry in terms of its development . On the way from the airport to the center of the city, it felt strange to be driving on a two lane highway…It reminded me of driving from the airport in Sanaa, Yemen after being in Africa for four months.
I have had two pretty uneventful days in Dakar. The first night I crashed on Sinetas floor, a women from Balitmore, who runs a bed and breakfast hotel (SenegalStyle Bed and Breakfast) just outside of the center of the city. There were two Ethiopians staying there who worked for the UN who I enjoyed talking to and reminiscing about my time in Ethiopia.
Yesterday I went and checked out Madelein Island National park, which was a few km boat ride from Dakar Its a bird sanctuary, and I’m not really into birds, so it was mostly boring, although the island itself was pretty cool. Afterwards, I went with my three new bird enthusiast friends, from Spain, Portugal, and Tunisia, to grab some food. After my first sandwich in two weeks, I went with them to check out a local wrestling practice on the beach near their hotel…Although Senegal does not have any Olympic wrestlers, the sport is huge hear and has a big following.
I gotta go, but wanted to just post a few snapshots…I’m on my way to Popinguine, a beach town 70km south of Dakar, to hang out for two days before heading back to Dakar on Monday for my early flight Tuesday back to New York. I’m completely worn out and ready to be back in the U.S.

Wrestling practice on the beach. Dakar, Senegal.

The west coast of Africa has some of the best Blue Marlin fishing in the world. Just a few days ago they had their huge annual Marlin tournament. It was upsetting to see that all the boats kept all of the Marlin they caught.

Snake.
